FORREST LODGE HUNTING

The "Canada Moose" defines big game hunting in North America. The season for bow and gun hunters starts in mid-September. Non-resident hunters must have a valid hunting license and must be a registered guest at a tourist establishment. There are many ways to hunt Ontario Moose: calling, paddling up creeks, small rivers or along the lakeshore and stalking in the bush. Being patient! Watching and waiting in feeding areas, edges of marsh meadows, 2-5 year old burn areas and forest cutovers can be very rewarding, especially if it's also a browsing or travel corridor. When moose begin to bed down, they crisscross the wind and then hook back to watch their downwind trail.

There are variables that can effect any moose hunt ,such as; bears, wolves, other hunters and of course the weather. Moose are solitary animals by nature, so moose sightings are infrequent in comparison to animal sightings on many other types of hunts, such as deer hunts.

We'll do our best to make sure that you have an enjoyable hunting experience, but we can't guarantee success for every hunter.

Bull Moose Taken Near Forrest Lodge in Armstrong Station Ontario

Moose

A bull moose can weigh as much as 1,400 pounds with antlers that measure 5 feet across. A cow can weigh 800 pounds and a calf can weigh more than 400 pounds. Moose can live to be 20 years old, but are in their prime between 6-9 years of age. Hunters should make sure to chose an appropriate caliber  along with the proper bullet weight to take down these large animals. Check the regulations for the minimum requirements related to Recurve bows, Compound bows and Crossbows. Muzzleloaders can be used during any regular gun season. Calibers of .50 and .54 are most popular. Remember: the killing is the easy part, it's the knowledge and skill that comes after the shot. Processing the animal properly, and retrieving it from the bush is where the real challenge begins.

Grouse

Grouse hunting in the fall is an added bonus for fall fishermen and moose hunters. There's nothing better than a surf and turf evening meal. We have three varieties of grouse: Ruffed, Spruce and Sharp tail. A small gauge shotgun, such as a .410 or 28 gauge are good choices for grouse hunting. As the sun begins to warm the morning air, look for birds sitting on fallen trees or limbs. Bush roads are a good area to look for grouse and oftentimes the birds can be seen along gravel paths or in dust bowls.
